Contests 2008

Ottawa Rocketry Group “FrankenRocket” Design Contest 2008

Please read entirely before asking questions.

An entry eligible for consideration in the competition shall comprise a model rocket of original design, the “vehicle”, such that

 1.         ALL materials from which the vehicle is constructed, must be obtained from the following list:

·          The poster tube provided.

·          Cardboard from any cereal box(s) - it should be evident  that the material comes from a cereal box but keep in mind that points will be deducted if the brand is overtly apparent.

·          Any amount of Kraft paper, of any form; LCBO bags are especially desirable and will be judged so when evident.

·          A single piece of tubing from a roll of aluminum foil or plastic wrap is allowable as a motor mount.  If the judges like you, extra points may be awarded for home-wound motor mounts.

·          Plastic bags originating from any shopping expedition, e.g. grocery bags, La Sensa what ever, man.  Material obtained from garbage bags will be permitted but will not achieve maximum points for pizzazz unless there’s something pretty damn special.

·          any amount of any string(s) of any form(s) is(are) permitted.

·          adhesives of your choice (cyanoacrylates are frowned upon and over-use of epoxies is a bit girly, lazy and often contributes to more vehicle mass than you realize).

·          up to 0.010 kg of any metallic component(s)

·          commercial launch lugs are permitted but home-made lugs will be smiled upon at judging time

·          no animals should come to harm as a result of the project

2.       The vehicle is to be propelled by a single MIGHTY Estes D-12 black powder motor provided by the entrant

3.       In order to qualify to “win”, an entry must be present and must fly at the first ORG launch subsequent to 01Aug2008.

4.       Each entry will be judged based on the following criteria:

·     considerable advantage will be given to the entry achieving the highest altitude (based on estimated (guessed) values from three or more members present)

·     maximum flight duration (measured or estimated)  and closest proximity of recovery point to point of launch (measured or estimated) will contribute to the consideration of overall performance

·     failure to observe expected deployment and successful recovery will, sadly, result in disqualification - successful recovery means that the vehicle must be flyable without ANY repair or modification (other than poppin’ in a new motor)

·     stability of flight as judged from smoothness and verticality of ascent

·     effective and rational incorporation of design rules

·     elegance of design

·     asking questions about the design space is likely to weigh negatively on your overall score

·     in the event that it’s too complicated to handle all the criteria, the entries can be judged based on “overall pizzazz “as determined by the Chair and, if present, the Tripoli Prefect.

·     up to three flights, at the discretion of the entrant, and subject to available flight time are permitted

5.     The prize will be pride, deep respect from your fellow club members, and perhaps some other prize that the ORG might afford, the cheap bastards.
